Reading
The following topics will be covered in Reading this week:
-Continuing with our class read aloud, Wonder by RJ Palacio. Students can't wait to read this book each day!
-Story Elements (character, setting, plot, them, conflict, resolution).
-Identifying story elements in the texts that we read.
-Introduction to the Reading Task Board for Reading Workshop.
-Introduction to Weekly Home Reading Responses, which are due every Friday.
-Making predictions before and during reading.
-Making "deeper" predictions.
-Writing and sharing predictions for Wonder.
-Introduction to inferring.
-What is the difference between Predicting and Inferring?
*Remember to read at home, at least 4 nights a week, and record your reading on your Reading Log.
Writing
The following topics will be covered in Writing this week:
-Reading examples of Personal Narratives and recording what we notice in the writing.
-Ways to "hook" readers into our writing.
-Reading different types of strong leads (Leads that ask questions, Leads that create a scene, Leads that explain the lesson learned, Leads that use dialogue).
-Practice writing strong leads.
Word Study
The following topics will be covered in Word Study this week:
-Spelling & Vocabulary List #1 (Rule: Short Vowel Words)
-Common & Proper Nouns
-Verbs
*Students will have 20 words on their Spelling & Vocabulary list. The first 10 words focus on the spelling rule, and the second 10 words are vocabulary words. Throughout the week, students will need to complete spelling and vocabulary activities in their notebook, along with activities on the website Spelling City. An assessment covering all 20 words will be given on Friday. The assessment counts for 2 grades: 1 for Spelling, and 1 for Vocabulary.
Science
The following topics will be covered in Science this week:
-Creating study cards for Atmosphere Vocabulary.
-Feeling air (Wind).
-Layers of the Atmosphere Review.
-Visiting the Discovery Lab.
-Atmosphere Vocabulary Quiz will be on Friday, October 3rd.
